Happy Thursday ya surgeons,
Calling all our readers in Arkansas- dental health can only go up from here.
A WalletHub study recently ranked Arkansans dead last in dental health.
Topping (Hah, see what we did there) the rankings? Apparently cheese and deep-dish pizza are good for your teeth.
Hereās todayās surgery plan:
š¦·Shuck emā. How to respond to some of the most common questions about third molarsā¦according to oral surgeons
āCoffee Break. Where people buy your lost stuff and the power of exocad smile design
š»Trivia Night. Giving your patients some cold, hard numbers on cracked teeth treatment
š¤¼Looking to Next Week. Weāre talkinā radiopacities and wrestling.

So the year was 2014ā¦
Ebola was the biggest pandemic concern and Kanye and Kim said they would be together foreverā¦that all turned out to be true, right?
But in the world of dentistryā¦something very important happenedā¦

Well thatās not exactly what happenedā¦but in any case, a special group of oral surgeons were on noticeā¦

So this group of oral surgeon superheroes came togetherā¦

This is the task force put together by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
And all those very smart surgeons with their big brains and secret identities put their heads together and came up with thisš

And thatšā¦That right there is the AAOMS White Paper on Third Molar Data
Even if you are NOT extracting third molars in your practice, thereās enough good data in this sucker you need to know.
For example, general dentists should probably be able to rattle off this fact:

Because you, as a general dentist, are often the gatekeeper
And sometimes, well, it can be a struggle to get them in the chair:

So letās say your patients walks in with some concerns:
And one of the most common responses to having retained third molarsā

Which is fine, but patients have to know the risks.
Just watch out for these-

Or another very common lesson in procrastination:

ā¦just know it ALWAYS gets more complicated;

Good things come to those who waitā¦
ā¦Definitely does not apply to wisdom teeth:
šAll risks of third molar extraction increases as we age
šThere is a 1.5x increased likelihood of complications over age 25
šSinus perforation risk may increase past 21 years old
That should settle all concerns, right?!

Some patients obliviously fall in the category of being high risk for nerve damageā¦(and what to look out for radiographically is worthy of a whole other email)
but overall the risk of damaging the IAN is very lowā¦

Yeah, very low risk.
Okay, okay but waitā¦
What if the teeth are erupted?!

Very much easier said than done.
Because third molars causing perio pockets is very common.

ā¦.In patients 52 to 74 years old.
And so is caries on erupted third molars:

All of this leads to one conclusionā¦.
Most of the the time itās a good idea to get those thirds out
So remind your patient:
šEverything gets tougher after 25
š°Pain is the common symptom from retained thirds
ā”Risk of nerve damage is very low
šŖ„Itās really hard to keep erupted third molars clean
ā¦and thank the AAOMS for being the superheroes that they are.

Coffee Break
Some random findings to keep you entertained until your next patient
š§³How to buy other people's lost stuff. Has your airline ever lost a piece of your luggage? If so, your stuff was probably resold in Alabama.
š»Personally recommended and not even sponsored. A free CE course on the power of exocad smile design. Very cool.
š¤Like charades, but for Powerpoint....and a game to get people out of their shell- giving a presentation based on random slides.
š¶Awwww. A very good-boy providing stress relief to a stressed patient.
Trivia Nightš»š»
Some trivia to help give your patient realistic expectations:
In November, we talked about when Oprah says to treat cracked teeth, so letās see if you can remember a very important stat:

What percentage of cracked teeth that receive a crown...

Hereās a hint:

Looking to next week
Weāre going through the 5 radiopacity wrestlers that will show up on your radiographsā¦and how to actually remember them.

Thanks for reading. Let us know how it went
luv u,
